McColl Award Winner ~

The Founders’ Circle of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design

takes great pride in announcing the 2008 recipient of the

McColl Award:

Susan Carol Beech

As one of the founding members of the Art Jewelry Forum, Susan has been a driving force in the development of studio jewelry into an important category in the art and design world as well as into an important focus area at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design.

Soon after meeting MMC+D Founding Director Mark Leach, Susan provided MMC+D with the seed money for an international jewelry collection.  After her first visit to Charlotte and to MMC+D she says, “Here was this wonderful gem of a museum.  I was so impressed.”  She became actively involved with the museum and the Founders’ Circle and has served as a Founders’ Circle board member. She continues to travel to COLLECT and SOFA with MMC+D curators to advise the collection and to enjoy the mutual educational process.

She says that, since jewelry is fabricated from all kinds of materials, including all the traditional craft mediums of glass, wood, clay, fiber and metals and use all the techniques required to form these materials, she views these pieces as representing the entire craft field. They are small in scale, but they carry big ideas.

For her vision for an international jewelry collection at MMC+D, her generosity in continuing to provide time and support for building the collection, and her energy and enthusiasm for MMC+D and the field, the Founders’ Circle is honored to present Susan Beech this award at the Eight Annual Mint Condition Gala, Art as Adornment, September 27, 2008.

The McColl Award was established by the Founders’ Circle and the Mint Museum of Craft + Design in 2000 as recognition for its first recipient, Hugh McColl, Chairman and CEO of Bank of America. The award recognizes the gifted vision, extraordinary generosity as well as endless energy
